Poultry Production: How botanical science is shaping modern performance

 In Publications

The poultry industry is evolving rapidly. Producers worldwide are under pressure to maintain performance while reducing routine antibiotic use, improving sustainability, and meeting higher expectations for animal welfare. At the same time, enteric challenges (such as coccidiosis and necrotic enteritis), heat stress, and variability in feed ingredients can compromise intestinal health and increase production costs.

In this context, functional botanical ingredients have become increasingly relevant. At Desert King®, our focus is clear: applying evidence-based botanical science to deliver natural, effective solutions that support modern poultry production systems.

Desert King®: A science-driven botanical Company

Desert King® specializes in the development of standardized botanical extracts designed for use in animal nutrition and health. Our expertise is built on decades of research, formulation, and practical application of natural ingredients derived from carefully selected plant sources and manufactured under controlled quality systems.

In poultry production, our work centers on two botanicals with complementary functional properties:

Quillaja saponaria, a rich source of triterpenoid saponins, associated with support for intestinal function and immune readiness.

Yucca schidigera, a source of steroidal saponins and phenolic compounds (e.g., yuccaols and resveratrol-like polyphenols), associated with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, as well as improved litter and air quality management.

These botanicals are the foundation of our poultry solutions, Nutrafito® and Nutrafito Plus®, developed to support performance, health, and operational sustainability under commercial conditions.

From botanical ingredients to functional solutions

Not all natural ingredients deliver consistent results. At Desert King®, botanical extracts are developed through controlled and standardized processes that aim to ensure stability, consistency, and functionality. This approach supports reliable performance across different production systems, feed matrices, and geographies.

Nutrafito® (Quillaja) and Nutrafito Plus® (Quillaja + Yucca) are designed to work as practical tools within poultry nutrition and gut health programs. They can be integrated with standard coccidiosis control strategies (vaccination or in-feed anticoccidials) and broader nutritional interventions (enzymes, organic acids, probiotics), helping producers maintain results while moving away from antibiotic growth promoters.

How Nutrafito® and Nutrafito Plus® support poultry health

Their value comes from a multi-pathway mode of action that connects day-to-day production outcomes with bird health:

  • Gut integrity and nutrientutilization: Saponins interact with lipids and membranes, supporting digestion and nutrient absorption (including amino acids, minerals such as phosphorus, and lipids) and helpingmaintain the intestinal barrier under stress.
  • Immune modulation and recovery:Quillajasaponins support balanced immune responses. Under enteric challenges, this can contribute to faster recovery and more consistent flock performance.
  • Oxidative stress and environment: Yucca phenolics contribute antioxidant/anti-inflammatory support, while yucca saponins can help improve litter conditions and reduce ammonia-related stress, which can be especially valuable during heat stress.

Taken together, these effects support a practical goal: healthier intestines, better resilience, and more predictable performance in antibiotic-reduced programs.

Proven results, validated by science

The performance of Desert King® poultry solutions is supported by peer-reviewed research and field evaluations across key poultry-producing regions, including the Americas and other global markets. These studies report outcomes that are directly relevant to commercial operations.

Research and on-farm data consistently link these solutions to measurable outcomes that producers value:

Performance comparable to AGPs

Trials and field evaluations show improvements in growth performance and feed conversion ratio (FCR) that can be comparable to programs using antibiotic growth promoters, depending on challenge pressure and overall management. Benefits are often most visible during periods of intestinal stress and recovery (e.g., coccidiosis cycling or subclinical enteric challenges).

Reduced antibiotic use

By supporting intestinal resilience and recovery, these solutions can help reduce reliance on therapeutic antibiotics in some production systems. Results vary by farm and health status, and they are best achieved when botanicals are used as part of an integrated gut health strategy.

Support for immune response

Scientific evaluations indicate support for immune function and intestinal integrity, including changes in mucosal and systemic immune markers and a more balanced inflammatory response under challenge conditions. A stronger intestinal barrier can also help limit translocation of opportunistic bacteria, supporting overall flock robustness. In coccidiosis models, a Quillaja + Yucca blend has been associated with enhanced intestinal integrity and improved recovery, supporting resilience to common enteric challenges such as Eimeria, Clostridium perfringens, and Salmonella.

Improved environmental conditions

Within Nutrafito Plus (the Quillaja + Yucca botanical blend), the Yucca schidigera fraction supports improved environmental management in poultry houses by helping maintain litter quality and reducing ammonia volatilization. Maintaining drier litter can also help reduce footpad lesions and hock burns – welfare issues that can contribute to reduced mobility and lameness. Lower ammonia can contribute to better air quality, improved respiratory comfort, and a more sustainable working environment, especially during periods of high stocking density or heat stress.

Practical solutions for modern poultry systems

As the poultry industry moves away from routine antibiotic use, producers need solutions that are natural, scientifically supported, and operationally reliable. Standardized botanical extracts offer a practical way to support performance and flock resilience while adapting to new regulatory and market demands. At Desert King®, we work closely with customers to optimize inclusion strategies and to help quantify value under real commercial conditions.

The Desert King commitment to innovation and sustainability

We are redefining poultry performance by combining botanical science with rigorous research and practical application. Through Nutrafito® and Nutrafito Plus®, Desert King® supports producers worldwide with natural, science-based solutions aligned with modern production goals. By merging nature and science, Desert King® continues to shape a more efficient, resilient, and sustainable future for the poultry industry.
