The technical conference \u00abForestry Day:\u00a0Quillaja\u00a0Plantations and Silviculture of the Sclerophyllous Forest\u201d drew\u00a0nearly 120\u00a0attendees in the Valpara\u00edso Region. The event focused on the conservation and commercial potential of local forest resources. Organized by the\u00a0Aprobosque\u00a0trade association, Desert King, and Bosques del Norte, the meeting brought together representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture, the Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG), the Agricultural Research Institute (INIA), the Forestry Institute (INFOR), and the National Forestry Corporation (CONAF), alongside agricultural landowners, academics, and students.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The itinerary opened at the Casablanca Municipal Theater with technical presentations and a welcome address by\u00a0Aprobosque\u2019s\u00a0Executive Director, Gloria Vargas, followed by opening remarks from CONAF’s Forest and Climate Change Manager, Alfonso del R\u00edo Cort\u00e9s-Monroy.\u00a0After\u00a0the\u00a0technical presentations, attendees traveled to the La Olla and El Refugio properties for field demonstrations on the practical application of silvicultural models and advancements in the\u00a0cultivation and domestication\u00a0of native species.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Javier Gonz\u00e1lez, Forestry and Sustainable Development Manager at Desert King, explained that the event centered on the sclerophyllous ecosystem and\u00a0quillaja\u00a0(<\/span>Quillaja\u00a0saponaria<\/span><\/i>) plantations. Its goal was \u00abto promote forest management for its recovery and productive development, and on the other hand,\u00a0quillaja\u00a0plantations as a viable alternative for the agroforestry market.\u00bb Participants visited the plantations to\u00a0observe\u00a0part of the cultivation and domestication process associated with this species native to central Chile<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The field visit\u00a0demonstrated\u00a0how forestry knowledge, productive innovation, and responsible natural resource management can be integrated to develop sustainable supply alternatives and new opportunities for the agroforestry sector.\u00a0Meanwhile, Gloria Vargas highlighted the event’s significance for the association, which typically concentrates its operations in southern Chile. She noted that the decision to partner with Desert King stemmed from a model that \u00abis something different, atypical, and special, which also drives the rural economy.\u00bb Vargas underscored the multiple applications of\u00a0quillaja\u00a0saponins, noting that \u00abhighly versatile chemical compounds are obtained from them, ranging from vaccines to antioxidants.\u00bb<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At the La Olla property, Bosques del Norte provided a comparative look at\u00a0the effects of forest management\u00a0in these ecosystems,\u00a0showcasing\u00a0unmanaged sectors with degraded native sclerophyllous forests alongside managed areas displaying several years of recovery. Jos\u00e9 Miguel Maiz, General Manager of the firm, praised the audience’s engagement, noting that \u00abthere were plenty of inquiries, ideas, and concerns.\u00bb<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

ENGAGING FUTURE FORESTRY\u00a0PROFESSIONALS<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The presence of higher education delegations was another highlight for organizers. The event gathered students and faculty from the forestry engineering schools of Universidad de Chile, Pontificia Universidad Cat\u00f3lica de Chile, Universidad Mayor, and Universidad Austral de Chile. Sebasti\u00e1n Pe\u00f1a, President of the National Corporation of Forestry Engineering and Science Students (<\/span>CONECIFM<\/span>),\u00a0stated\u00a0that the meeting offered an unprecedented opportunity for the next generation of professionals.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
